High School GPA Calculator
List your classes, grades and level. You get your weighted GPA (Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0) and unweighted GPA side by side, the two numbers colleges see.

Unweighted GPA treats every class the same and tops out at 4.0. Weighted GPA rewards harder classes and can reach 5.0. With the example classes, the unweighted GPA is 3.60 and the weighted GPA is 3.90. The weighted vs unweighted GPA guide has an interactive transcript you can toggle.
Is it worth taking the AP class?
On a weighted scale, a B in AP (4.0) equals an A in a regular class (4.0). Colleges also read the rigor of your schedule directly, so a harder class with a solid grade usually helps. But an unweighted GPA drop is real, so weigh it against your workload.

Questions students ask
How is weighted GPA calculated in high school?
Each grade gets its normal 4.0-scale points, then Honors classes get +0.5 and AP or IB classes get +1.0 (so an A in AP counts as 5.0). The points are averaged by credit. Failing grades get no bonus.
Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
Both, and many recalculate it themselves. Admissions offices typically look at your unweighted GPA alongside the rigor of your schedule, so the weighted number mainly signals that you took hard classes.
Is a 4.0 weighted GPA good?
A 4.0 weighted can mean mostly A's in regular classes or a mix of A's and B's in AP classes. Look at the unweighted figure next to it for the fuller picture.
Does my school use +0.5 for Honors?
Many do, but policies vary: some give +1.0 for Honors, some weight only AP/IB, and some cap weighted GPA. Check your school profile or counselor if your transcript GPA differs.
How many credits is a high school class?
Typically 1.0 credit for a full-year course and 0.5 for a semester course. If every class has the same credits, you can leave them all at 1.
