GPA Scale

Reading the chart
This is the most common US scale: a 10-point spread per letter with plus and minus grades, where each step is worth 0.3 or 0.4 grade points. It is the scale the GPA calculator and the grade calculator use.
Common variations
- No plus/minus: A 4.0, B 3.0, C 2.0, D 1.0, F 0. Many high schools use this.
- A+ as 4.3: a minority of colleges reward A+ above 4.0.
- 7-point scale: 93–100 A, 85–92 B, 77–84 C, 70–76 D, below 70 F.
- Weighted 5.0 scale: +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB, as shown in the last two columns. See weighted vs unweighted GPA.
Outside the US, scales differ completely (UK degree classes, 1–10 scales in much of Europe, 1.0–5.0 in Germany where lower is better). Convert using the target institution's guidance rather than a generic formula.

What is the 4.0 GPA scale?
The standard US scale where an A is worth 4.0 grade points, B 3.0, C 2.0, D 1.0 and F 0, with plus and minus grades adding or subtracting about 0.3.
What GPA is an A-?
An A- is 3.7 on the 4.0 scale, usually 90–92%.
Is an A+ worth 4.3?
At most schools an A+ is capped at 4.0. Some colleges award 4.3, which lets a GPA exceed 4.0 even without weighting.
What is a 5.0 scale?
A weighted scale used by many high schools, where AP and IB classes add a full point so an A counts as 5.0. Honors classes typically add 0.5.
Do all schools use a 10-point scale?
No. Some use a 7-point scale (93–100 A, 85–92 B, 77–84 C, 70–76 D) and some drop plus/minus grades. Always check your school's handbook.
