How GPA works
GPA is a credit-weighted average. A 4-credit class counts four times as much as a 1-credit lab, so a B+ in Calculus moves your GPA more than an A in the lab.
For the example above: English 3.7 × 3 = 11.1, Calculus 3.3 × 4 = 13.2, Psychology 4.0 × 3 = 12.0, Lab 3.0 × 1 = 3.0. That is 39.3 quality points over 11 credits, a 3.57 GPA. Step through it yourself in how to calculate GPA.

Questions students ask
How is GPA calculated?
Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), multiply by the course credits to get quality points, add the quality points, and divide by the total credits.
Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?
At most US colleges an A+ is capped at 4.0, which is what GradeWise uses. A few schools award 4.3 for an A+; if yours does, your GPA would be slightly higher than shown.
Do pass/fail classes count in GPA?
Usually not. Pass/fail, audit and withdrawn (W) courses carry credit or none but no grade points, so leave them out. A failing grade (F) does count, with 0 points.
How many credits is a typical class?
In US colleges most lecture courses are 3 credit hours and lab sciences are often 4. In high school a full-year course is usually 1 credit. Use whatever your transcript shows.
What is the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA covers one term. Cumulative GPA covers every graded course you have taken. To combine them, use the college GPA calculator, which adds this term to your previous credits.
