How the conversion works
Each GPA point value sits at the bottom of a letter band: 4.0 = A (93%), 3.7 = A- (90%), 3.3 = B+ (87%), 3.0 = B (83%), and so on down to 0.7 = D- (60%). A GPA between two values is placed proportionally between those percentages. That is why a 3.5 comes out near 88.5%, not the 87.5% that the naive (GPA ÷ 4 × 100) shortcut gives.

What percentage is a 3.5 GPA?
On the standard scale a 3.5 falls between a B+ (3.3, 87%) and an A- (3.7, 90%), which works out to about 88.5%.
What percentage is a 3.0 GPA?
A 3.0 is a B, which starts at 83% on the standard 10-point scale.
Is there an official GPA to percentage formula?
No single formula is official. Colleges convert using their own scale. GradeWise maps each GPA to the bottom of the matching letter band and interpolates between bands, which matches how most US schools define letters. Some sites use (GPA ÷ 4) × 100, but that overstates low GPAs and understates the scale's real cutoffs.
What about a weighted GPA above 4.0?
Percentages are based on the unweighted 4.0 scale. Subtract your Honors/AP bonus first, or use your unweighted GPA.
